Local History
Founded in 1818, Wellington has had a few notable residents, industries, and events happen through it's 200+ years.
The Wellington-Oberlin Slave Rescue occurred at the American Hotel [where Herrick Memorial Library now stands}and some believe highlighted the division between abolitionists and slave owners that fueled the start of Civil War.
The most famous resident, Archibald Willard moved here as a young man with his family. He worked as painter for a local carriage and furniture maker. While he was working at the Sawtell Studio, he witnessed a drum and fife corps practicing in the town square. He drew, "Yankee Doodle Dandy", which later became America's iconic painting- "The Spirit of '76" Mr. Willard is buried in Wellington's Greenwood cemetery and has relatives living here today.
Another noteworthy resident, is Myron T. Herrick, who donated the funding to build the Herrick Memorial Library in honor of his parents. Mr. Herrick became a wealthy banker, then politician, who then became the Ambassador to France. He is the only American with a street named after him in Paris.
Wellington's heyday involved a lot of cheese. In the late 1800's our village was known as the "Swiss Cheese Capital of the World" There were over 40 cheese making and storage facilities in town. Sadly, after refrigeration became common, farmers found it more lucrative to sell milk for cream and ice cream. The last cheese facility closed in 1912. Thankfully, many of the leaders of the industry built amazing homes, many still stand today on South Main Street. They are a magnificent reminder of our history.
Rick Payerchin with the Morning Journal wrote a great article focusing on the local, national, and international history of one important Wellington block.
